Truck shopping has become my favorite pastime the last few days. I looked at a ‘96 F250 diesel that I couldn’t drive because the brakes sucked, then yesterday I looked at an ‘01 F250 diesel that I liked but can’t use to replace my car because it’s a supercab, not a crew cab, and we haz baby.
So I started looking for something that would just replace my truck, and I found something kinda awesome:
‘89 F350, regular cab, dually. 460, automatic, allegedly totally rust free...which is kinda unheard of where I live. It’s also driveable and very short money.
I’d like a diesel, but I don’t actually need one, I just like the clatter. I’ve never had a big block, so that’s kinda cool, and I think it’s a pretty good looking truck. Also, combined with my blue P71, it’ll look like a giant American flag when they’re parked together.
Hopefully the rain mostly holds off today so I can see it today. If it's pretty good, it's likely that I'll buy it, given the cost.

I think regular cab, short bed, duallies are really awesome looking trucks...everything is big and small at the same time. They look like real life hotwheels or tonka trucks

So... how much are they asking?

We had an Econoline with a 460 in it. You could actually watch the gas gauge needle move faster than the tach. Would be great if it actually made any power with all that fuel.

I love old Ford trucks. I’ve had something like 6 of them. The weak spot on those trucks is the auto tranny, a solid engine though.
Warning: an auto 460 is going to get 8mpg on the hwy, worse (if you can imagine) in town. I had a 89 250 with the 5 speed zf and a 460. It would get 11 mpg empty on the hwy, 9 mpg loaded and it had an overdrive (an auto doesn’t).
If you can afford the gas bill, it’s amazing and go for it! I loved everything about that truck but feeding it.

My current truck is a 2000 F150 with the 5.4, and it excels at turning fuel into noise. Luckily I won't be driving this one a ton.

$1500. For a super solid truck like that around here (New England, where our roads are basically made of salt) it's a pretty great price.

I’m kinda surprised how not much worse that is than my 2000, which usually returns me 11mpg. Even if I used this one to commute, my drive is so short it wouldn’t kill me...I’ll be using it to tow a Saturn race car ever once in a great while and to run to Lowes occasionally.
If the tranny ever shits the bed, a manual swap might be in order...

Shit, I would totally jump on that if I were near it. I bought my ‘93 F150 here in Wisconsin for $2500 2 years ago...it was the only old truck I could find that was not rusting to pieces. This one looks in even better shape than my truck did when I bought it

Here, I will help you spend the rest of your money. :)
This will help:

You can also convert from crappy batch fire to sequential for power and mpg:

Add in a 429CJ cam (and CJ valves if you want) and deck the heads (also P&P if you can) for 9.5:1+ comp and then go tow the crap of of some stuff.

By 89 they had fixed most major problems with the auto transmission in that generation, but it wasn’t nearly as good as the C6 it replaced.
Enjoy the truck, the 460 actually produces far more power than the diesels of the era. At the serious expense of economy though.
Fun fact. If you get tired of the looks of the flat front it’s a direct swap for either an 80-86 or a 92-96 front clip. Body lines and everything match up perfectly.

Nice price. For $1800 a friend bought a same-era four door dually a few years back. I can’t recall the engine but it did have a 5-speed manual. That was such a cool truck. I still see it driving around all the time (new owner). It was also a southern truck - the paint was faded and peeling but there was no rust. I should add that this was also in New England.

ah the good 460. 8mpg when towing, also 8mpg when not towing. If you can find a good 7.3 crew cab get it. Engines are bullitproof just watch out for tranny issues and them being beat on too much. Also avoid ones with gooseneck hitches or 5th wheel hitches as they probably towed a lot

I went to look at an 01 F250 with a 7.3 Powerstroke last night, which might be the route I end up going...twice the cost of the ‘89, but I love the 7.3 like a son. One of my favorite engines of all time.
